Baldoon Castle ruins are located just outside Bladnoch, Scotland near Wigtown. It was owned by the Dumbars of Westfield (1530 – 1800). It is reported that the Ghost of Janet Dalrymple Dunbar roams the Castle. Mid 1600 Janet, the eldest daughter of Sir James Dalrymple was betrothed to David Dunbar, heir of Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon. Her heart was not in it. She loved the penniless Archibald, third Lord of Rutherford. her parents forbid the relationship. Janet married David in the church of Old Luce. That night the Bride stabbed her husband and escapes through the window into the garden.
Legend says that Janet never recovered and died shortly afterwards, on September 12th 1669. David Dunbar is said to have recovered from his injuries.
Visitors have reported seeing the ghost of Janet Dalrymple Dunbar roaming the castle ruins on the anniversary of her death wearing her blood stained nightdress.
