Ghost Sighting Leicester
05/02/99: The world's media has descended on Leicester following the discovery of a ghostly image which lasts just one second on a security camera.
Experts are currently examining the image from a camera at 18th Century Belgrave Hall but that has not stopped the BBC, ITV, American network station CBS and even a Japanese television station baying for copies.
The hype, which began after the Leicester Mercury broke the story last Friday, has left museum staff dumbfounded. They are at a loss to explain the image.
Museum assistant Mr Bill Garrett, who was the first to see the ghostly image, said: "I think it's fair to say where the Mercury leads the rest will follow.
"We can't believe the interest this has sparked. The phones have been ringing constantly and we've had a constant stream of media at the hall.
"Nippon Television, CBS, The Times, the Daily Mail...the list goes on. We're all just amazed. This proves ghosts catch the imagination of people throughout the world.''
Mr Garrett said a team of experts on paranormal activity had been studying the footage but so far it was unexplained.
It was recorded at about 5am and it appears to show two figures in Victorian-style clothing bathed in light and it is believed the figures are producing heat and energy similar to that given off by a fluorescent light.
The camera, which normally records an image every second, inexplicably froze for five seconds when the image appeared.
One theory is that it was stopped by a sudden surge of electricity in the atmosphere.
The hall, which was the family home of Leicester MP John Ellis, has long had a reputation for being haunted - with an unexplained rise of incidents in the last nine months.
