21/05/1998: A strange ghostly lady at a Leicester museum has set supernatural temperatures rising.
Mike Snuggs, the gardener, is the latest person to have a ghostly experience at Belgrave Hall Museum. He saw an eerie lady in a terracotta-coloured long dress and black boots. He only got a glimpse of her for seconds, but colleagues said he went as white as a sheet.
He was chatting with them when the ghost came down the stairs. She appeared to be in her 50s as he was talking to staff in the hall. But she suddenly vanished. He said: “ I only saw her for seconds. I felt she was being drawn to the garden here. We were all a little bit spooked by the experience. It was very strange.”
It is not the first time that staff at the museum have had strange experiences. A number have seen the “green lady” who also wanders down the stairs of the building, built in 1609 in Church Road.
Mrs Jeannie Bilton and Emma Martin who are both assistants who work there have smelt old-style odours of bread and gingerbread, as well as stewing plums. Jeannie said: “It was very weird. We had nothing cooking, but on the top of the first floor there was a really strong smell of bread cooking. ”Emma, who has only been at the museum a brief time, said: “I could definitely smell gingerbread, but we don’t cook here and I could find no explanation.”
Footsteps - thought to be female - have also been heard upstairs, mystifying security staff Norman Baum and, John Postle (now retired). They spent ages looking around the building to find the source, but nobody was there.
The mystery continues.
